According to the author, Amy McDonnell, the 12 things truly mature men don't do are:
1) They don't go out on a school night
2) They don't see their partners as secondary to their friends
3) They don't put off seeing their moms
4) They don't try to please others
5) They don't meet confrontation with anger
6) They don't run away from difficult situations
7) They don't shy away from their responsibilities
8) They don't live for the weekend
9) They don't have a big group of friends
10) They aren't afraid to be weak in front of their partners
11) They don't get scared by the possibility of starting their own family
12) They don't live in the moment
Each item on McDonnell's list is a stereotype that society associates with being a man and therefore with being masculine. I find many problems with this, as masculinity is a completely socially constructed idea and does not have to be associated with being a male. Not all men have strictly women as significant others. Due to this, McDonnell's article is a) assuming that all men are attracted to women and b) excluding and alienating a portion of the world's male population. All of these social expectations of "mature men" are also very much tied to Western culture. Not every culture has social expectations that men should avoid angry confrontation or that they should be "weak" and vulnerable with their significant other. This article is clearly geared towards those in Western culture, and yet comes off as if these rules apply undoubtedly to men worldwide. On the note of being "weak", in item #10, McDonnell writes that mature men "aren't afraid to be weak in front of their partners". I have a problem with the way she wrote this. The author is saying that men should act more feminine (which is also a socially constructed idea) when discussing personal matters with their partner. Through this act of femininity they are being weak, which is then implying that women's communication patterns are weak, and ultimately concluding that women are weaker than men.
